About Akilah, the Creator of Binder Buddies™ Books

Hello and thank you for your interest in Binder Buddies™! I’m a math intervention teacher based in Hartford, Connecticut. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of teaching in a variety of settings—from public and private schools to higher education and adult education. This broad experience has given me a deep understanding of the different ways learners engage with material and the challenges they face.

About eight years ago, I began creating concise math booklets and other learning tools for my middle school students. To my delight, the booklets quickly became a trusted resource—students would even pop out of their usual classes to borrow them to reference during assignments. It was clear I’d made something genuinely helpful.

Having worked with a wide range of learners, including many who are neurodivergent, I’ve seen just how tricky it can be for students to access and remember important information. That inspired me to develop Binder Buddies™—a series of beautifully illustrated, easy-to-use reference books covering math, world languages, STEM, and more. The lovely illustrations were done by Liz Grace, based in New Haven, Connecticut, adding a vibrant and engaging touch to each book. My goal is straightforward: to help learners and families feel more confident and independent in their studies.

When I’m not working on Binder Buddies™, I enjoy baking, swimming, watching Downton Abbey, and eating Bajan fishcakes.
